Family Thermometer Exchange Program
Mercury is a liquid metal which is toxic to humans,
accumulates in the food chain and is persistent in the environment.
Children are very vulnerable to its hazards. Mercury affects the central nervous
system causing fatigue, weight loss, tremors, personality changes and permanent
brain damage. In the environment, mercury can be converted into methylmercury,
which is especially toxic.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the disposal of thermometers
contributes 17 tons of Mercury to the solid waste stream annually.
