The Kiwanis Club of Richmond meet at Richmond Police Post. The meeting was called to order at 12:20 by John Hiller. We stood for the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Shane Prewitt shared the opening prayer. We ate our lunch supplied by Richmond Community Schools.

Members present were: John Hiller, Dennis Privette, and Shane Prewitt. Our guests from Sterling Heights were: Frank Birdwell (who will be our Lieutenant Governor), Bob Tobelek, Sherry Shannon, Larry Potrin, and Joe Owczarek.

The Sterling Heights group has 25 members.

John shared the projects we do here including the Bicycle Rodeo. We started K-Kids. They will be in a parade on Saturday. We make pies as a fundraiser. We pick up trash which we need to schedule for this month. We are in the process of setting up a free throw contest. We do not participate in the Good Old Days since so many other groups are doing that. Two weeks ago we had a presentation by a girl we sent to police academy. She is hoping to be involved in the FBI or CIA.

For the parade, the children are decorating the trailer at 6:00 P.M. on Friday night. We need some people to walk alongside the trailer to watch children during the parade. On Saturday, we will meet at Beech Street at 10:30 A.M.

Sterling Heights does a five day food basket project. Nineteen schools collect food. We take it to a central location, sort it, repack it, add to it, and deliver it 310 senior citizens and 208 families. It is a big project. They collect 50 to 60,000 canned goods. We have a building free of charge to use as a central distribution place as long as it isn’t rented out.

Since 1985, we have had a Kiwanis World Service Metal which comes with a grant of $10,000. Nguyen Thanh Binh is the recipient this year. She founded Children of Peace in 1993, an organization that serves poor, disabled, and orphaned children in Vietnam. They support schools and health care. Support comes from her personal funds, schools, churches, organizations, etc. It still runs out of her home with all volunteers helping over 2,000 children. There are another 4,000 to be served. Chuck Nagy, our next governor, has chosen this as our project for the coming year. He is asking for $10 per member to support this project. He also has asked us to personally support it. Frank Birdwell, our next Lt. Gov., did a pitch on this project asking us to budget it for the coming year. He would like us to call if we will be supporting it.

The meeting adjourned by 12:50 P.M.
