This past week Shepherd Lincoln Mercury
in downtown Richmond donated dictionaries to all 3rd grade students
attending Will Lee Elementary, St. Peter Lutheran School and St. Augustine School.
The dictionary project is a national program designed to provide a dictionary
for all third grade students. The idea of the program is to aid third-grade
teachers in their goal to see all their students leave at the end of the year
as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers. Jim Shepherd, owner
and president of Shepherd Lincoln Mercury, recently learned of this program
and thought it would be a great project to become involved with to help all
of the local schools. As Jim passed the dictionaries out at the schools
he had an opportunity to speak with the kids. Jim told them “a dictionary
is perhaps the first and most powerful reference tool that a child should own.
This program makes it possible for all children to have a dictionary that is
theirs to keep, that they can take home and use and hopefully keep for a very
long time.” This is a wonderful program to help teachers and children.
Jim Shepherd’s goal is to continue this program annually, and at the start of
each school year provide dictionaries to all third graders.
