New Year's
Eve revelers welcomed in 2002 relatively quietly, Macomb County law enforcement
officials said Tuesday.
Only a few minor noise disturbances and a handful of drunken driving arrests
peppered the year's end, with many agencies reporting a quiet holiday.
Statistics for all of Macomb's law enforcement agencies weren't available New
Year's Day, but at least one department believes a greater public awareness of
drinking and driving laws has garnered fewer alcohol-related arrests.
In Clinton Township, police made no drunken driving arrests New Year's Eve,
despite designating two patrol cars to drunken driving enforcement. The cars
were provided through a grant and officers assigned to the duty randomly checked
dozens of motorists Monday night, officials said.
"I think everybody's gotten the word (about drunk driving)," Sgt. Dave Dunn
said. "Many of the people that were pulled over (and dismissed without a ticket)
were designated drivers, and I saw more people taking cabs than I've ever seen
before (in year's past)."
Other communities made similar reports.
